Delirios Armchair: A Fusion of Digital and Artisanal Craftsmanship

Designer Guto Requena Merges Technology and Brazilian Culture in Award-Winning Design

The inspiration for Delirios came from the desire to experiment with digital technologies alongside artisanal methods, aiming to unite technological advances with the Brazilian cultural legacy. The name Delirios was chosen as a tribute to Flavio de Carvalho, a Brazilian artist known for his powerful social criticism through the integration of design, painting, performances, set design, and architecture in his creations.

Delirios stands out for its unique blend of craftwork and digital production methods. The armchair's base was digitally designed using parametric waffle programming, a type of 3D modeling that creates a flow structure made with fittings. This structure was digitally made by CNC in certified wood pieces, while the backrest and seat are products of craftwork production.

The armchair's realization combines analog and digital techniques. The base, made from multi-laminated wood, was designed using parametric programming to create a fluid structure fixed by fittings. The fabrication of the structure was made from CNC. The upholstered rests lightly on the base, which touches the floor through four points of support, adding to the armchair's light and subtle appearance.

Delirios measures 950 mm x 1140 mm x 1040 mm. The base is made from certified multi-laminated wood, and the upholstery is available in leather, wool, thread, or cotton. The armchair was presented at the launch of the Mais55 Design brand in Sao Paulo in June 2020.

Creating a piece of furniture that assembles analog to digital through parametric programming was a significant challenge. However, the result is a comfortable armchair with a unique design that pays homage to the Brazilian cultural legacy and the potential of digital technologies.
